I decided to research this bit of kit quite thoroughly as, along with the sleeping bag, its possibly one of the biggest outlays. It also has to do the job properly as I will be carrying all my kit 150 miles in it, so it needs to be comfortable. In the end I went with the Raidlight Runner R Light, which is a 30litre pack. I strongly considered the Raidlight Adventure which is a 40 litre pack, but felt the additional size would only encourage me to take equipment I didn’t need and thus increase the weight.

Part of the decision to get a Raidlight pack was the amount of accessories readily available. One of which is the Equilibrium R frontpack which gives an additional 5 litres of space. This also helps to spread the weight of the pack across the whole body rather than just the back.

I’d strongly recommend getting the Raidlight bottle carriers to use with it, as they carry the the bottles better than having all that weight of fluid bouncing around in the front pack. And if you get the Radlight straw bottles you can drink on the move easily. (to make this workable you will probably need to modify both bottles and carriers).
