After 4 years of inactivity from leaving University I had piled on the weight and was tipping the scales at a hefty 22st 6lb.

Drastic action was required so I signed up for the Sheffield Half Marathon in May 2005. My training started in earnest in November 2004 and although running was a completely alien concept to me, having previously avoided it at all cost, I soon found it was taking over my life. The training wasn’t without its pitfalls, but I was spurred on by the words of family and colleagues who thought I would either fail in my attempt or die trying!!
I completed Sheffield Half Marathon and although I swore never to wear a pair of trainers ever again I was soon entering more events.
With numerous 5k’s, 10k’s and Half Marathon’s under my belt, and rapidly approaching my 30th birthday, I decided that a new challenge was needed, one that was even more radical than the Sheffield Half Marathon seemed at the time……….and what is more radical than the Marathon des Sables!!
